PROCESS TECHNOLOGY

The high dimensional phase space in which all nanopowders exist are not accessible using one processing technique. At Nanomaterials we draw from an array of techniques, some are proprietary modifications of public domain processes discussed in the open literature. Other processes were developed here, acquired from others, or developed under federally sponsored programs. Manufacturing nanopowders having complex composition requires special understanding of the driving forces behind phase formation, size and size distribution, but just as important it requires experience. The tools needed to access any particular point in the nanopowder phase space for one compound of complex composition may not be the same for another compound. Our process technology and flexible process line allows us to mix and match subprocessors so that virtually any point in the nanomaterials landscape can be visited.

NEW PROCESS TECHNOLOGY

Nanomaterials recently applied for a patent for a revolutionary process technology technique, which allows us to manufacture a stream of nanoparticles, each having a specific number of atoms, molecules, or ion sets for nanoparticles in the low nanometer range. We can build particles having 1000 atoms or 1001 atoms per nanoparticle. In the high nanometer range, we will be able to guarantee particle size variation to within a small fraction of a nanometer. This non-statistical non-thermodynamic approach eliminates the "distribution" in the particle size distribution associated with competing nanoparticle synthesis techniques and hence allows for complete monodispersity.

The process is ideally suited for nanoparticles with complex composition. It can produce metal alloys, carbides, nitrides, oxides, phosphides, etc. The processing tool now under development when fully mature will be able to produce between 600 g and 3 kg per hour per processor.

We are now exploring opportunities to take this technology from the laboratory and onto the manufacturing floor. For more information, contact us.
